A592 Road Closures

Update 5/7/24

We understand that the A592 over Kirkstone Pass between Troutbeck (Windermere) and the junction with The Struggle will be closed completely from Monday 8th October through to Friday 18th October. Access over Kirkstone Pass via Ambleside and The Struggle should remain open, but increased traffic on this route due to the closure may cause delays. If you are travelling to Glenridding from the south please plan your journey accordingly.

Please note we have not been officially notified of the above works as for previous closures, but this info is on the council website at https://www.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/parking-streets-and-transport/streets-roads-and-pavements/road-maintenance-closures-and-improvements/plans-projects-and-improvements/safer-roads-a592

We advise that you refer to this webpage for all the latest updates and news, and contact the council directly with any concerns or questions regarding the road closures.  We will be getting all our updates via this webpage and we have no way of obtaining additional information outside of this.

Update 28/3/24

Kirkstone Pass is due to re-open this evening 28/3/24, but due to adverse weather during this last closure the planned work wasn’t completed, and Kirkstone Pass is planned to close completely again for 2 weeks 16/4/24 to 30/4/24 to complete this work, please plan your journey accordingly.

Update 28/2/24

Yes, the closures are planned to continue this year, with what will hopefully be a final full road closure over Kirkstone Pass from Monday 4th March through to Thursday 28th March.

Update 30/6/23

The closure is scheduled to conclude on Friday 30 June (overnight) with the road being fully open for the morning of Saturday 1 July.

To allow for the works programme to be continued to be delivered before the school summer holiday there will then be temporary traffic lights in place for two weeks commencing on Monday 3 July, subject to weather conditions.  During this period, both vehicles and cyclists will be able to pass through, however there may be some traffic delays.

Under the current programme we expect there will be no works taking place under the Safer Roads scheme on Kirkstone Pass after the Saturday 15 July until Wednesday 6 September. This is to ensure that the road is clear throughout the School Holidays.  However, please note that works will commence under traffic lights starting from Wednesday 6 September until the next closure in October.

Following feedback from residents and businesses within the local community it has been agreed to move the September closure to October.  The closure will now start on Monday 2 October and will last for a maximum of three weeks to avoid the school half term holiday at the end of the month.  During this closure, Metcalfes will be working on excavating the entire width of the carriageway to support its full reconstruction.

After the October closure works will be continued to be delivered through temporary traffic lights and overnight closures up to and past Christmas.

A further road closure is scheduled to take place from 1 March 2024, in order to complete the resurfacing work.  This closure will span over a three-week period, subject to weather conditions.

As you may be aware, there are planned roadworks and road closures on the A592 between Troutbeck and Glenridding, which will affect traffic and access coming from the South over the Kirkstone Pass.

These are planned to commence in early February 2023 and are expected to last for over 12 months with completion programmed for March 2024:

06/03/23 – Full Road Closure for 4 weeks

05/06/23 – Full Road Closure for 4 weeks

02/10/23 – Full Road Closure for 3 weeks

01/03/24 – Full Road Closure for 3 weeks
